About us
The architecture firm JSWD was founded in Cologne, Germany, in 2000. Today, JSWD works from several locations and is managed by the founding partners Olaf Drehsen and Frederik Jaspert as well as the partners Christian Mammel, Mario Pirwitz and Tobias Unterberg. Together, they have the vision of managing around 280 employees from 30 nations. The office consists of architects, interior designers, support staff, model makers and administrative staff with in-depth multidisciplinary knowledge who work successfully throughout Europe and abroad.
JSWDs architecture is characterized by a dense synthesis of shapes, functionality and selected materials. These three elements are inseparable and assume an equal, playful bond with all other requirements within the construction task. The resulting buildings reveal the continuous pursuit of clear concepts and formal clarity.

Products & Services
We develop the identity of our buildings as the result of location specifics and the intended function. We convert the client’s self-concept into Corporate Architecture. JSWD’s approach links conceptual clarity to the reserved utilization of formal means. Many of our structures distinguish themselves by an efficient and intelligent exterior combined with technical knowhow and design requirements.
We are capable of dealing with all planning service levels. As the general planner, we perform all planning services required for a construction project incl. project control. We collaborate for all construction projects (domestic and foreign) with specialist engineers who are familiar with our methods. If required, our projects will comply with certification terms by DGNB, according to LEED and BREEAM, etc.
New Kanzlerplatz Offices, Bonn, Germany
Office Center at „Neuer Kanzlerplatz Bonn“
Client: Art-Invest Real Estate, Cologne
Owner since 2022: Union Invest
1st prize Competition 2015, Completion 2022/2023
Intended Certificate: LEED Gold
Winner German Design Award 2024
Three buildings with a hexagonal floor plan nestle at the corners of the site, creating a central, public open space. The 28-storey high point develops from one of the up to seven-storey office buildings. This landmark creates a strong presence and anchors the new office quarter in the urban fabric, visible from afar. The ensemble in the direct vicinity of the UN Quarter is impressive thanks to the variations in the façade made of white architectural concrete.
Mobility Hub Hybrid.M, Munich, Germany
Bus depot and elevated garage in the Moosach district of Munich
Client: SWM, Public Services of Munich
1st price competition 2014
A future-oriented bus depot for approx. 200 buses with a shell development has been built on the approx. 3,6 hectare site in the Moosach district of Munich. The surrounding area is characterized by the wide thoroughfare of the Georg Brauchle Ring. The objective of the approximately 25 m high office building with the integrated high-rise parking garage is to shield the interior from noise pollution. The new rectangular large-scale design blends well into the surrounding predominantly orthogonal and large-scale structures. The six-storey new construction along the road runs parallel to the industrial buildings and maneuvering areas of the bus maintenance depot. The hall-like widening of the northwestern corner of the building is the architectural highlight and serves as the address for the new office building. The plan calls for the administrative offices of the bus maintenance depot to be housed on the first and second upper levels. Additional office space above may be made available to third-party tenants. Inside atria and vertical service/ access areas provide structure to the building. Grass will be planted on all roof areas. The 400 m long scale-like facade “decelerates” the elongated structure. Depending on utilization, the individual building sections will have various facade types of a highly recognizable “family of facades”. For example, the office facade is characterized by diagonally arranged anodized aluminum window elements of various dimensions, which are diagonally offset. The floor-level windows ensure maximum daylight in the interior. Uniformly anodized aluminum frames and the continuous metal ledges reinforce the overall design principle.
Confex, Exhibition and Convention Hall Cologne Trade Fair, Germany
New Exhibition and Convention Hall Cologne Trade Fair
Client: Koelnmesse GmbH, Cologne
1st prize, Competition 2015/2016, Completion 2024
The cubature of the Confex fits harmoniously into the ensemble of existing trade fair buildings and, together with the new Hall 1 (also JSWD), forms the structural conclusion of the inner-city trade fair area towards the Rhine Park to the west.
The multifunctional new building is intended for events with up to 6,000 participants. A variable connection with other exhibition halls, especially with the neighboring Hall 1, enables a completely new spectrum of event formats for trade fairs, congresses and events. The offer of 22 conference rooms of different sizes also supports this.
The Confex can also be operated self-sufficiently and accessed directly via the new west entrance.
The German Sustainable Building Council (DGNB) has pre-certified the project with platinum. Among other things, photovoltaic elements on the entire roof area will contribute to the sustainable orientation of the building.
H5 Ministry Building, Düsseldorf, Germany
New building project H5 for the state government of North Rhine-Westphalia
Programm: offices, conference, shared service, restaurants, library
1st prize competition 2021, JSWD in cooperation with Gina Barcelona Architects
Client: BLB North Rhine-Westphalia, Düsseldorf
In Planning
A new building for new ministries of the state of North Rhine-Westphalia and other state users will be constructed on a site near the Rhine in the center of the government district and as part of the "Blue-Green Ring". Part of the project is the first timber hybrid high-rise building in planning in Europe with a total height of over 110m.
Our concept places a tower and an atrium building on a connecting base building at the opposite corners of the site. In the west, at the foot of the tower, a three-story glazed main entrance marks the address of the new ministry building. From this corner, one can see both the state parliament building and all the way to the Rhine promenade. At this point, the topography of the design also incorporates the library oriented towards the northern park. This rises in steps and thus connects with the levels of the catering and conference area. The entrance to the atrium building is located to the east. The staggering and greening of the so-called "Harold terraces" results in a great quality of stay. Here, for example, there is the possibility to hold open air events. Together with the adjacent open spaces of the "Harold Bay", a generous open space is created, which completes the "Blue-green ring" of on its south side.
UKSH University Center Kiel, Germany
Client: UKSH in Public Private Partnership with BAM and Vamed
1st Price Competition in Cooperation with HDR, tsj, ash 2014
Completion New Construction 2019, Refurbishment 2024
The University Medical Center Schleswig-Holstein (UKSH) is expanding and optimizing its two locations in Lübeck and Kiel. The project involves expanding certain structures and renovating and partly converging existing buildings in order to increase efficiency and cost-effectiveness as well as to ensure that UKSH can remain competitive in the future.
At the Kiel Campus, the various building uses will be centralized in a large urban form and logically interlinked with the existing buildings. The campus will have a new main entrance. The outpatient clinics, other departments and the wards, which are arranged in a comb-like shape, can be reached via the adjoining main entrance. The new forecourt provides access to additional departments and newly created competence centers. The existing ENT clinic building will be converted and extended in accordance with the preservation order. Towards the waterfront, the mother-child center forms the keystone of the central clinic. The adjacent botanical garden provides a green surroundings.
While the base of the new building is clinkered in a way typical of the region, the facades of the wards above it are set off with white fiber-cement panels. Together with the gold-colored sunshade elements made of expanded metal, creating a cozy hotel feel.
