The Federal Chamber of German Architects
The Federal Chamber of German Architects (Bundesarchitektenkammer e.V. - BAK) in Berlin is the umbrella organisation of the Architects Chambers of the 16 German Länder - bodies of public law.
BAK represents nationally and internationally the interests of more than
120,000 working architects (as of January 1st 2010). Among them a majority of 86.6 per cent works as construction architects, 5.6 per cent work as landscape architects, 4.3 per cent are registered as interior designers and 3.4 per cent as urban planners.
The designations "architect", "interior architect", "garden and landscape architect" and "urban planner" are protected by the rules and regulations of the Architects Chambers of the Länder. Only those who are registered in the relevant Architects' Chamber are allowed to be entitled. Every registered architect receives the "Deutsches Architektenblatt" (DAB), the monthly official periodical of the BAK.
Main topics and tasks of the BAK:
- To strengthen the consciousness of architectural culture and the built environment
- Consumer protection
- To maintain and improve the economic and legal conditions of professional education
- To promote the cooperation and regular exchange of experience with the Architects Chambers of the Länder
In cooperation with the State Minister at the Federal Chancellery for Media and Cultural Affairs, the BAK rewards the architectural award "Taut-Scholarship". The Federal Chamber of German Architects is also the patron of the German architectural award which is granted every other year.
On an European level, BAK is an active member of the Architects Council of Europe (ACE), the federation of the architects' organisations for the member states of the European Union; it is located in Brussels. On an international level, the BAK represents the interests of German architects in the German section of the „Union Internationale des Architectes" (UIA).
The BAK has founded the "Network for Architectural Export" (NAX) for promoting the activities of German architects abroad.
